Custom instructions let you tell Monologue exactly how to handle your dictation. You can set it up for things you say all the time, define formatting rules, or change how Monologue behaves in different contexts.

Accessing Custom Instructions

  1. Open Monologue

  2. Go to Settings

  3. Open Instructions and Modes

  4. Add or edit your custom instructions

Types of Custom Instructions

Snippets

Add your most-used text, like calendar links or email addresses, and Monologue automatically inserts them when you say the trigger word.

Formatting Rules

Define how your content should be structured. For example: When I dictate lists, format them as bullet points with dashes

These instructions run across all your apps. If you want specific instructions for specific apps, you can customize Modes instead.

Examples

You can use custom instructions for spelling, tone, and formatting preferences.

  • `Use British English spelling.`

  • `Keep my writing concise.`

  • `When I dictate lists, format them as bullet points with dashes.`

  • `Use sentence case for headings.`

For app-specific behavior, create or edit a Mode instead. For example, you might keep email dictation more polished while keeping messages casual.
