Why does Claude open when I press the right-side Option key?

Fix a shortcut conflict between Claude and Monologue when both apps are using the right-side Option key.

If pressing the right-side Option key opens Claude instead of starting dictation in Monologue, Claude and Monologue are usually listening for the same shortcut.

Monologue currently defaults its recording shortcut to the right-side Option key, so a conflict can happen if Claude is also set to use that same key.

How to fix it

You can fix this in either of these ways:

  1. Change Claude's shortcut if you want to keep Monologue on its default shortcut.

  2. Change Monologue's shortcut if you want Claude to keep using the right-side Option key.

If you use Claude often, changing Monologue is usually the better long-term fix because it stops both apps from competing for the same key.

Option 1: Change Claude's shortcut

  1. Open Claude.

  2. Open Claude's Settings.

  3. Find the shortcut that is using the right-side Option key.

  4. Change it to a different shortcut that does not conflict with Monologue.

  5. Test Monologue again.

Option 2: Change Monologue's shortcut

  1. Open Monologue.

  2. Go to Settings > General > Shortcuts.

  3. Click the current Recording shortcut.

  4. Press a new shortcut that is not already used by Claude or another app.

  5. Test the new shortcut where you want to dictate.

Common replacement shortcuts

  • Fn

  • Right Command

  • Control + Option

If it still doesn't work

  • Make sure Claude and Monologue are not set to the same shortcut.

  • Try a shortcut that is less likely to be claimed by another app.

  • If you keep seeing conflicts, contact support and include which shortcut each app is using.
